How did we get to Cheap HDTV

Technology has a life cycle, sort of like the mythical bird “Phoenix”. As new technology comes out, it supplants the old technology, leaving the older technology to exist at a cheaper price point. And the new technology, while superior then the original, also brings down costs in production and materials as more are made. So when you lay this on HDTV, you see the perfect storm that exists for cheap hdtv in our world.

But why is is it cheap hdtv?

Basically the cost of building an LCD HDTV has come down in price, and production capabilities of the big 3 LCD manufacturers (we are talking the companies that actually build the LCD technology and then license it to other builders) have increased dramatically over the years. The 3 LCD builders are Samsung, Philips and Mitsubishi. They then sell the actual LCD technology to other manufactuers who then put them inside their HDTV sets – like SONY. Yes SONY does not make LCD screens any longer but buys it from Samsung (yes the SONY you brought has the same screen as the cheaper Samsung). So why are some HDTV cheap?

Cheap HDTV to the rescue

Basically the LCD technology is the same but the outside parts are the difference. Hence Sony is more expensive because it actually uses higher quality materials, software and hardware for the complete set. And that is why you can now get Cheap HDTV because other makers like Vizio can offer the LCD but then put it with cheaper outer pieces and equipment to lower the cost. Everyone does this including Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic. They have higher lines still, but now they want to flood the market with cheaper lines to gain market share.

Don’t bite the hand
